Abstract
The current publication aims to publish the spatial differentiation of physical and biophysical components in Portugal, partially published and comprised in the research project" Metodologias de Avaliaqao da Reserva Ecologica Nacional - MAREN"
The information regarding each of the components was transferred into an administrative base (municipalities), in order to integrate these data with the socio-economic ones, as well as allowing regional physical and biophysical differentiation (administrative base).
First, the proposed environmental conception is presented, as well as the importance of the components under analysis. These belong to the environmental subsystems of the lithosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and noosphere.
The variables were gathered in parameters, indicators and indexes, according to the Piano Nacional da Politica do Ambiente (National Plan for the Environmental Policy).
Those variables were organised into an administrative base, instead of natural units. Therefore it was necessary to develop a methodology to transfer the cartographic and scattered data to the chosen administrative base.
The map information regarding regional contrasts must be used on a national and regional scale and never on an intra-public base scale. These maps are presented by system (environmental sub-system), and divided into parameters, indicators and indexes.
